Mohai jinhu 墨海金壺

Mohai jinhu 墨海金壺 "Golden jar of the ink sea" is a series collectanea (congshu 叢書) compiled by the Qing-period 清 (1644-1911) scholar Zhang Haipeng 張海鵬 (1755-1816) who is also editor of the series Xuejin taoyuan 學津討原 and Jieyueshanfang huichao 借月山房彙鈔. The Mohai jinhu includes 115 books with a total length of 727 juan. The name of the series is derived from a story in the novella collection Shiyiji 拾遺記, where a divine calligrapher uses a golden jar filled with lacquer-like ink.

While the Xuejin taoyuan is a reorganised version of Mao Jin's 毛晉 (1599-1659) Jindai mishu 津逮秘書 (also known as Jiguge congshu 汲古閣叢書), the Mohai jinhu was compiled as a series of rare texts not easily to be found in other collections. It is based on a text collection of the Wenlan Studio 文瀾閣 and includes numerous Song-period 宋 (960-1279) printed texts or manuscripts. Part of the texts has been extracted from the Ming-period 明 (1368-1644) encyclopaedia Yongle dadian 永樂大典.

Zhang Haipeng paid attention to the completeness of texts and refused to includes only fragmentary versions. In case that complete versions were not available, it was at least necessary that these fragment collections had already been printed in the past. The series is arranged according to the four traditional categories Confucian Classics (jingbu 經部), historiography (shibu 史部), "masters and philosophers" (zibu 子部), and belles-lettres (jibu 集部). The series was produced with great care, and the texts are very reliable as the result of text-critical studies. Textual deviances in ancient texts have been solved by a small text-critical commentary interpolated into the main text. Unfortunately only very few of the 100 original copies have survived.

The scholar Qian Xizuo 錢熙祚 (d. 1844) therefore later produced a revised version of the series in the shape of the Shoushange congshu 守山閣叢書. In 1921, the Bogu Studio 博古齋 in Shanghai published a facsimile version of the original Mohai jinhu.
