Yanshi congchao 艷史叢鈔 "Draft to a Series on Books about Love" is a series of collectanea (congshu 叢書) including books on love and the love business. It was compiled by a Qing-period 清 (1644-1911) scholar called Master Yushen 玉魫生 from Songbei 淞北, who can be identified as Wang Tao 王韜 (1828-1897). The 30-juan-long collection includes 12 texts, mainly of authors using pseudonyms.
Most stories originated from the region between Nanjing and Shanghai and deal with so-called "painted boats" (huafang 畫舫), where prostitutes offered their services. The texts are important sources for the social history of the lower Yangtze region during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They can be used to attest information found in theatre plays, novellas and poems. The series was published 1878.
