Quan Han Sanguo Jin Nanbeichao shi 全漢三國晉南北朝詩 is a complete collection of ancient poems (gushi 古詩) compiled by Ding Fubao 丁福保 (1874-1952), courtesy name Zhonghu 仲祜, style Chouyin 疇隱, from Wuxi 無錫, Jiangsu. He had been a student at the Nanqian Academy 南菁書院 and carried out studies abroad in Japan. After his return to China, he was a teacher in several institutions throughout China, but continued his studies in ancient literature. He also was a “wandering physician” for some time. In 1912, he founded the editorial house Yixue Shuju 醫學書局 in Shanghai.
His anthology of 54 juan length is divided into 11 collections (ji 集) in accordance with dynasties and ages, presenting the works of more than 500 persons from the Han 漢 (206 BCE-220 CE) to the Sui period 隋 (581-618). It thus imitates Feng Weine’s 馮惟訥 (1513-1572) Gushiji 古詩紀. Ding Fubao made use of Feng Shu’s 馮舒 (1593-1649) commentary collection Shiji kuangmiu 詩紀匡謬, but also added critical commentaries (see jiaokanji 校勘記) of his own. In his preface (Xuyan 緒言), Ding points out the errors of earlier collections, and thus justifies his own.
The collection presents a complete picture of the development of regular poetry up to the beginning of the Tang period 唐 (618-907) that is usually seen as the heyday of regular poems (shi 詩). It is thus a fully reliable source that was only supplanted by Lu Qinli’s 逯欽立 (1910-1973) Xian-Qin Han Wei Jin Nanbeichao shi 先秦漢魏晉南北朝詩 from 1955.
The collection was published by the Yixue Shuju (undated, 1920s) and reprinted in 1959 by the Zhonghua Shuju 中華書局. In Taiwan, three editions were published, namely Wiyen Yinshuguan 藝文印書館 (1960?), Yiwen Yinshuguan (1968), and Shijie Shuju 世界書局 (1969).
