Dazaopu 打棗譜

Dazaopu 打棗譜 is China's oldest book specialized on the jujube tree (Ziziphus jujuba). It was written during the Yuan period 元 (1279-1368) by Liu Guan 柳貫 (1270-1342), courtesy name Daochuan 道傳, from Pujiang 浦江 in the prefecture of Wuzhou 婺州 (today in Zhejiang). Liu was edict attendant (daizhi 待制) of the Hanlin Academy 翰林院.

Even if the jujube tree and methods of cultivation are mentioned in old farming books like Qimin yaoshu 齊民要術, Liu's text is the first and most detailed account on this plant. He mentions 73 cultivars and their characteristics and requirements for cultivation. The text is divided into two parts, the first providing information on "affairs" (shi 事) and the second one on various types and designations (ming 名). As usual, the book quotes from ancient texts, but also adds contemporary knowledge.
